PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Data Engineer designs, builds, integrates and maintains data solutions using the firm's strategic data platforms, with a particular focus on Microsoft Fabric and the firm's financial systems. The role translates business, finance and reporting needs into secure, maintainable and supportable data solutions that improve data quality, enable automation and deliver measurable value.

Working within the Data Engineering Team, the role combines data solution design with hands-on data ingestion, transformation, modelling, integration and reporting. The Data Engineer works closely with Finance, business stakeholders, Product Owners, Architecture, Cyber Security, Infrastructure, platform owners and service teams throughout the data lifecycle, from discovery and design through deployment, support and continuous improvement.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS ROLE

In this role, you will:

  • Analyse business, finance and reporting needs, translating them into practical data designs and delivery options.
  • Design, build and maintain data pipelines, lakehouses, warehouses and related solutions using Microsoft Fabric.
  • Develop reliable data ingestion, transformation and modelling processes aligned with business and financial reporting outcomes.
  • Design and implement integrations between financial systems, enterprise platforms, internal systems, APIs and data services.
  • Select the appropriate delivery approach, using batch or real-time processing, platform capabilities, extensions or custom code according to need.
  • Produce secure, maintainable, scalable and supportable data solutions aligned with enterprise architecture and approved platform patterns.
  • Apply appropriate source control, testing, release and deployment practices to data solutions.
  • Work with platform owners and governance teams to ensure data solutions meet relevant security, privacy, quality, retention and operational requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across data pipelines, integrations, models, financial systems and dependent services.
  • Monitor, support and continuously improve data solutions following deployment.
  • Maintain clear data designs, technical documentation, data lineage and support information.
  • Present data solution options, decisions and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provide realistic estimates, identify risks and dependencies, and communicate delivery progress.
  • Review colleagues' work and contribute to shared data standards, reusable components and good engineering practice.
  • Work closely with Finance teams to understand financial data, controls, reconciliations and reporting requirements.
  • Design data models and reporting layers that provide trusted, consistent and usable financial information.
  • Evaluate emerging Microsoft Fabric and data capabilities and recommend where they could deliver measurable value within appropriate controls.

AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE

You will be:

  • Experienced in designing and delivering enterprise data solutions, ideally in a complex financial or professional services environment.
  • Strong ability to understand business and finance processes and translate requirements into effective data solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, including Data Factory, OneLake, lakehouses, warehouses, notebooks and Power BI.
  • Knowledge of SQL, data modelling, data integration patterns, APIs and appropriate use of Python or Spark.
  • Understanding of data security, privacy, quality, governance, lineage and operational support requirements.
  • Experience applying structured testing, source control, release management and deployment practices to data solutions.
  • Ability to diagnose problems across data pipelines, integrations, models, financial systems and dependent services.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical decisions and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to produce clear data designs, technical documentation, data dictionaries and support information.
  • Ability to work constructively across multidisciplinary teams, manage competing priorities and learn unfamiliar technologies quickly.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working with financial systems and finance data, including integrations, controls, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Experience developing Microsoft Fabric data pipelines, notebooks, lakehouses and warehouses.
  • Experience with Power BI, including semantic models, DAX, reporting and security.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure data services, connectors, APIs and integration capabilities.
  • Knowledge of dimensional modelling, master data, reference data and financial reporting structures.
  • Understanding of data governance and catalogue capabilities, including Microsoft Purview.
  • Experience with DevOps tooling, source control and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Relevant Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data or Power BI certifications.
