Purpose of the Role

We are seeking a hands-on, experienced & collaborative Product Manager to own product requirements, lead UI design, and drive delivery across our in-house product portfolio, centred around the application of generative AI to the legal industry. The successful candidate will combine strong product management expertise with design capability, using Figma or similar tools to translate ideas into clear user stories, features and epics, and ultimately into high-quality delivered outcomes, along with interest in generative AI (GenAI) – ideally design & delivery of generative AI tools. This is a role with significant ownership of the details and would suit someone who enjoys working at the intersection of user needs, product thinking, design and delivery.

You will join our Innovation Group's product function - a small, fast-moving team responsible for shaping and delivering digital products and solutions that support both internal and client-facing innovation. The team works in close partnership with a dedicated development team based in Manchester and Leeds, alongside wider innovation colleagues and stakeholders from across the business. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys working as part of a collaborative team while also taking ownership of product requirements and design leadership

You will work across our portfolio of in-house products - from our flagship GenAI chatbot to a growing suite of point-solutions - serving lawyers, innovation professionals, and their clients on high-value, billable work.

The Team

Our Innovation & Legal Technology (ILT) team, formed in 2015, is one of the three teams that make up the Innovation Group. ILT combines technology and legal expertise, fully integrating these capabilities into our business. It has grown into a fast-paced and dynamic unit, constantly evolving to provide opportunities for contribution and career development.

Within ILT, our in-house product function focuses on building bespoke technology solutions that support legal workstreams in innovative ways. We collaborate closely with lawyers, business stakeholders and innovation professionals to identify where product-led technology can improve how legal work is delivered - for the firm and for clients.

Our current portfolio includes a GenAI chatbot built for use by lawyers and innovation teams on client matters, alongside a range of point-solutions supporting complex project work, data analysis and visualisation, and workflow automation. These are not internal back-office tools - they sit at the centre of client-facing innovation, which means quality, compliance, and confidentiality are fundamental to everything we build.

What to Expect in This Role

Supported with the appropriate training and guidance required, your key responsibilities will include:

Product Specification & Requirements

  • Act as the main point of contact for product requirements, including the capture, refinement and management of user stories, features and epics.
  • Translate ideas, opportunities and stakeholder requests into clear and actionable product requirements.
  • Manage the product backlog, ensuring work is prioritised and ready for development.
  • Work with stakeholders to understand user needs, business goals and technical constraints, turning these into practical product outcomes.
  • Become the hands-on expert on our internal GenAI tools, being able to answer detailed questions, use them in sophisticated ways, and delivery in-depth training.

Design Leadership

  • Lead on UI design across relevant products, using Figma or similar tools to create wireframes, mock-ups, journeys and high-fidelity designs.
  • Ensure a consistent, intuitive and effective user experience across the products you support.
  • Work closely with developers to ensure designs are clearly understood and implemented effectively.
  • Bring a strong design perspective into product discussions, helping to shape solutions that are both user-centred and commercially valuable.

Agile Delivery

  • Support the shaping and refinement of work for development, helping to ensure requirements are sufficiently detailed and understood.
  • Participate in and help facilitate agile ways of working, including backlog refinement, sprint planning and other delivery activities as appropriate, working closely with our Scrum Master and others in the Product team.
  • Take ownership of the detail while maintaining momentum across multiple streams of product and design activity.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Reporting to and supporting the Head of Product, engaging Senior Managers and Heads-of across the Innovation group to elicit requirements, validate designs, and gain sign-off.
  • Interacting with lawyers and client-facing colleagues across the firm to understand user needs and gather feedback on live products.
  • Engaging across the firm to promote best-practice product development, proactively identifying opportunities to use technology to solve problems.
  • Working collaboratively across internal teams including IT, Innovation & Legal Technology, and wider business services.

Mentorship & Team Development

  • Working alongside and mentoring our junior Product Owner, modelling good product practice and helping them develop their skills in user story writing, refinement, and delivery.
  • Supporting and organising innovation graduates on 4-month rotations through the team - providing meaningful product tasks and coaching them in product methodology.
  • Providing regular feedback, training, and guidance to other members of the team.
  • Staying aware of market trends and developments in legal technology, automation, and AI.

Your Areas of Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • 3+ years of experience as a Product Owner or Product Manager, ideally delivering SaaS web-based products.
  • Experience of Generative AI products and using Large Language Models in production.
  • Demonstrable expertise in writing high-quality product specifications - user stories, acceptance criteria, user journeys, and process maps. We may ask to see examples at interview.
  • Familiarity with Figma (or equivalent) design tools and confident in using these to create or update UI designs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Flexible, proactive, and able to co-ordinate multiple competing deadlines, working to tight timescales with a sense of urgency.
  • An innovative approach, with creative thinking and openness to new ideas.
  • Positive, enthusiastic, with strong collaboration skills and a conscientious work ethic.

Desirable

  • Experience working in or with regulated industries where compliance, data sensitivity, or client confidentiality is a core concern - for example legal, financial or professional services.
  • An understanding of how legal work is delivered and the challenges affecting law firms and the changing legal services market.
  • Confident running Agile ceremonies: sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint review etc.
  • Experience in the legal-tech sector, or working with legal professionals as primary users.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Azure DevOps or equivalent for backlog management.
  • Experience mentoring junior team members or supporting graduate or intern programmes.
